La Venta Flores, a cultural space at the heart of Actiu

SEPTEMBER 2018 | 2 minutes

When Vicent Berbegal acquired the land where the future Technology Park would be built 15 years ago, there was already a house on the land, La Venta Flores, an old 19th century farmhouse which was originally used as a stop-off for the travellers from the different bordering localities: Castalla, Onil, Ibi and Alcoy. A meeting place between merchants that played a key role in the economic development of the area over the centuries.

This house still retained the remains of its building: a large kitchen, the guest rooms, the horse trough and the large dining room in the lower part, a place for neighbours to meet and socialize. A space that was a true reflection of the roots of the area and the relationship between its people. Hence, we decided to keep it, restore it and give it a new use, not very different from the one it always had.

VENTA FLORES
Actiu’s cultural legacy

Coinciding with Actiu’s 50th Anniversary, through a renovation carried out by the architecture studio AbyRG - ARCHITECTURE by ROBERTO GARCIA, this inn has been reborn as a reference cultural centre, as a meeting point between people from all over the world who come to Castalla to learn about the design, innovation and creativity of the area. It is a sign of the commitment to the area, culture, sustainability and Actiu's architecture.

“The aim of renovating La Venta Flores was to give a second chance to a building that was decaying. We decided not to knock it down because we understood that its values were ours. We wanted to reinforce them to remind us, on a daily basis, where we come from”, explains Actiu founder, Vicente Berbegal.

“Inspired by a purely Mediterranean architecture based on air, light and water, we have created a building using sustainable architecture that aims to become a space for exhibitions, training and conferences. A place that houses social activities of reflection, debate and dialogue around issues related to technological progress, design, new leadership and debates of a social nature”, states Soledat Berbegal, Director of Communications at Actiu.

Next to the house, a sculpture by the artist Peter Foster has been installed, that reflects on the nature of time. Under the title “The movement of time”, this piece allows us to envisage the link between the past and the future through perforations on COR-TEN steel plates.

La casa de La Venta Flores stands as a new space that looks to the future without forgetting the past and with the objective of keeping the spirit of the territory that surrounds it alive as well as that of professionals, artists and entrepreneurs, among other groups, who only need a space to get their energy flowing.
