Talking to Ramón Esteve from Meetia

Talking to Ramón Esteve from Meetia

JULY 2024 | 3 minutes

Ramón Esteve is one of Spain's most renowned architects. His facet as an architect is complemented by interior design and the design of furniture and lighting elements, which favour a dynamic and luminous functionality in the spaces he devises. His solid trajectory throughout the 21st century demonstrates the position of Esteve and his studio, REE, with respect to the architectural and design forms they create and develop.

"One of my favourite phrases of the project has been the one that describes the emotional engine of the design: 'Sit and Feel' Meetia's sensibility".

The installation "Design Meets Industry" has been one of the most visited and valued installations of Madrid Design Festival 24, what have you tried to represent and what has been the relationship with the visitor who observed the exhibition?

We showed with simple and visible messages, in a very evident and clear way, that it is as important to conceive and design a piece as it is to have the industrial capacity to bring it to life. We facilitate the understanding of a creative and industrial process, and we will do so by showing how ACTIU can provide a solution to any challenge and idea of the designer. For the installation we have conceived the route of a perimeter tube, in line with the one that includes the design that characterises Meetia. Each metallic line, arranged in a circle, converges in the central piece, an unstructured seat, with its entrails on view, which shows its inner beauty, the materials and shapes that make it up. Cutting-edge materials and textiles that care for and provide comfort and health to the human body, in short, to people.

Madrid Design Festival "Design Meets Industry".

What has MEETIA, as your first design for Actiu, meant in your career?

As an architect and designer, I consider architecture and design as a global and transversal approach. The challenge was to cross it with a company in full evolution and expansion, with such deep-rooted human values. It has been a real work in common, in collaboration at every step and phase.

The challenge was to combine concept, quality and comfort in an almost inseparable way, with a designer/company intersection under the same coordinates and the same design premises.

Where can MEETIA seating be placed, in which spaces was it conceived?

Meetia is a collection of single, double, triple and bench sofas that allow freedom of configurations that adapt to very diverse environments. They are very versatile pieces, I have thought of all the spaces I develop, public health and cultural works, in private buildings for public use such as offices, hotels, restaurants or ephemeral architecture installations, retail and in family homes, why not?

"...shows its inner beauty, the materials and shapes that constitute it. Cutting-edge materials and textiles that care for and provide comfort and health to the human body, in short, to people".

What has been the fundamental challenge of the MEETIA project with ACTIU?

We believe that each project is born with the aim of creating complete environments through an interaction between design and architecture, both disciplines intertwined, where design and architecture complement each other to generate a harmonious experience for the user. Pieces that adapt to the space and bring life. People must be at the centre of the design approach, from all angles. With Actiu it has been very simple, it is a company that opens up to the designer, seeking a constructive and fruitful dialogue, with a balanced position of shared learning.
