How to apply Green Building to your projects

How to apply Green Building to your projects

FEBRUARY 2025 | 4 minutes

In a world where we spend up to 90% of our time indoors, the design of spaces must not only be functional, but also sustainable and healthy. Green Building, or sustainable construction, is a key response to today's environmental challenges, ensuring that the environments we inhabit not only minimise their environmental impact, but also promote people's wellbeing.

At Actiu, we have integrated this philosophy into our Life Friendly Spaces approach, creating spaces designed to take care of both the environment and those who live in them.

What is Green Building?

Green Building is not just a trend, but a methodology certified by institutions such as the US Green Building Council and the German Design Council. It focuses on:

  • Energy efficiency: Use of renewable energies, reduction of emissions and optimisation of consumption.
  • Sustainable materials: Choice of recycled, reusable and low environmental impact raw materials.
  • Well-being and health: Creation of spaces with optimised air quality, acoustic comfort and ergonomics.
  • Circular life cycle: Furniture and architecture designed to last, repaired and reused.

The positive impact of this methodology not only benefits the environment, but also increases productivity, reduces operating costs and improves the user experience.

How to integrate Green Building into your projects?

For an architectural or interior design project to be truly sustainable, it is necessary to implement strategies that maximise its efficiency and reduce its environmental impact. Here are a few key points:

1. Choosing responsible materials: Choose certified and recycled materials that reduce environmental impact without compromising quality.

  • FSC and PEFC certified wood, guaranteeing sustainable forest management.
  • Recycled plastics, such as Fluit's polypropylene from fruit and vegetable crates.
  • VOC-free glues and ecological coatings, which minimise the emission of toxic substances.

2. Design with a circular approach: furniture and spaces should be designed with durability, disassembly and reuse in mind. Meetia is a clear example of this approach, as its modular structure optimises its transport, facilitates its repair and reduces its carbon footprint.

3. Integrate energy-efficient solutions: The choice of elements that reduce energy consumption is key.

  • Energy-efficient LED lighting
  • Use of renewable energy in offices and public spaces.
  • Efficient insulation to minimise temperature loss

Our case studies: Actiu's sustainable furniture in action

At Actiu, we design solutions that not only comply with Green Building principles, but also create functional and sustainable spaces for people.

Meetia: tradition, sustainability and technology

  • FSC and PEFC certified wood, ensuring its responsible origin.
  • Optimised assembly process, minimising waste and reducing the CO₂ footprint.
  • Dismountable design, which facilitates maintenance and prolongs its useful life.

Fluit: Fluid and recycled design

  • Made from 100% recycled polypropylene and fibreglass.
  • Inspired by the fluidity of a boat's sails, with no visible joints.
  • Certified by Green World Compounding as a circular economy solution.

Qyos: Micro-architectures for acoustic efficiency

  • Acoustically insulates spaces, reducing ambient noise.
  • Uses recycled PET and acoustic glass for optimal insulation.
  • Promotes flexibility, creating more efficient working environments.

Green Building Trends and Future: Regenerative Economy

Green Building is evolving towards a more profound approach, aligned with the regenerative economy, which seeks not only to reduce environmental impact, but also to regenerate and restore ecosystems. This trend responds to a growing demand for sustainable solutions in the market, driven by changing customer expectations and stricter environmental regulations.

Concepts such as life-centred design are gaining prominence, as are trends that prioritise the well-being of users while adopting sustainable production processes at every stage of the project life cycle. Energy efficiency and the rational use of water are crucial elements in this transition to a new era of responsible construction.

Our experience designing a more sustainable future.

Actiu is a benchmark in sustainability in the furniture sector. Its commitment to the environment has been recognised with milestones such as obtaining LEVEL® 2 certification, a distinction awarded under the new FEMB 2023 version. This certification endorses the circular economy and the use of recycled materials in its products, consolidating Actiu as a leader in sustainable construction.

It is also a pioneer in registering its carbon footprint on the platform of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, managing to avoid the emission of more than 2,175 tonnes of CO₂e since 2022, thanks to the adoption of renewable energies and energy efficiency measures.

In short, Green Building represents an opportunity to transform the way we design and build spaces, making them more environmentally responsible and aligned with the needs of users. At Actiu we have an unwavering commitment to sustainability, leading this change by offering solutions that combine innovative design, functionality and respect for the planet.

"Sustainability is not just a trend, but an imperative need to ensure a balanced future. At Actiu, we believe that design and innovation must go hand in hand with respect for the environment, committed to an industry that is capable of generating spaces that are responsible for the planet and future generations". Carmen Berbegal, Director of Sustainability and CSR at Actiu.
