The Ramón Esteve Estudio architectural studio has developed a refurbishment that balances tradition and modernity, maintaining the original structure of the building while adapting its spaces to new educational uses. The layout in two wings with interior cloisters and a central body dedicated to common areas favours connectivity between spaces and natural lighting in the classrooms.

GOAL

The rehabilitation of the Antiguo Asilo San Juan Bautista, located opposite the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) and next to the old Turia riverbed, had the goal of converting this historic building into the new urban headquarters of the European University in Valencia. The intervention had to respect the heritage value of the building, preserving emblematic elements such as the Nolla mosaics, the stone floors, the chapel and the interior cloisters, while adapting it to the requirements of a contemporary educational centre.

The aim was to provide nearly 2,000 students with a versatile environment that would encourage learning, interaction and well-being. To achieve this, the furniture selected had to integrate harmoniously with the architecture of the space, offering flexibility, ergonomics and design in each of its areas.

SOLUTION

The refurbishment of the building has been a balancing act between heritage conservation and educational functionality, ensuring that the original structure remained intact while adapting it to contemporary needs. In addition, the project incorporates a newly built annexe that expands the capacity of the centre and integrates harmoniously with the whole, respecting the criteria of design and functionality.

To guarantee a dynamic and versatile environment, flexible classrooms have been created, with furniture that allows the spaces to be quickly reconfigured according to academic needs. The common areas have been conceived as places for meeting and socialising, with pieces that combine design and comfort to encourage interaction. In the work and administration areas , ergonomics and privacy have been prioritised, ensuring efficient and comfortable spaces for daily performance. The rector's hall, with its representative furniture, reinforces the institutional character of the university, combining functionality and aesthetics in an environment of great heritage value.

The result is a university headquarters that fuses history and innovation, offering a space that inspires students and teachers, and responds to the demands of contemporary learning.
